Educating future democratic citizens is an important part of the McCourtney Institute’s mission. We seek to equip students with the tools they need to engage in productive, informed conversations in all aspects of their lives. We encourage and reward this behavior in several key ways:
The Nevins Fellows program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to complete internships at organizations that are committed to promoting democracy.

We host seminars during the fall and spring semesters that allow for a deeper dive into a particular topic, such as democratic dissent or Donald Trump's presidential campaign. These courses are part of Penn State's Liberal Arts Edge initiative to apply the liberal arts to real-world questions and problems.

The Voices of Democracy project promotes the study of great speeches and debates in US history. The emphasis of the project is on the actual words of those who have defined the country’s guiding principles, debated controversial social and political issues, and shaped the identity and character of the American people.
